How To Install Cedar Shake Siding And Its Cost
For the charm and sophistication of exterior wood siding, cedar shake siding is a pricey, but beautiful option. Cedar shake consists of natural wood shingles that come in different sizes to create a very rustic look for your home that exudes class. It is popular for vacation resorts, but there is no reason you can't bring its woodsy charm home with you.
Cedar shake will cost a little more than the average siding option and it is slightly more difficult to install, but with care and patience, you can still avoid the necessity of contractors and do this project yourself. Add beauty and elegance to your house with natural, durable cedar shake and enhance the appeal of your property.
Installation Methods
For a proper job you should buy cedar shakes of about 18 inches, as well as plain wood shingles of about 10 inches which will be used for your first starter strip. You can opt for white cedar, Western red cedar, or other tones to create the effect you want. Over time the color does tend to change and can become gray, so look into these details before you choose.
1. Measure along your house to see where the bottom cedar shingles will go. Remember they will hang lower than the point they are attached, so draw a chalk line along the range they will go.
2. Start with your wood shingles and nail them into that bottom line. The cedar shakes will attach to this strong wood.
3. Nail your cedar shakes into the wood shingles 10 inches up the shake and on either corner, directly over top. Choose to keep them all straight and level or stagger them if you want a more creative effect.
4. Continue with the rows above, choosing the amount of overlap you want the shakes to have. Drawing chalk lines as you move up will help you stay even.
5. Cut any shakes that need to fit around doors, windows, eaves or trims.
Once you complete the project, you will have a rustic, cedar shake siding home that will be unlike any other. The natural charm of the wood will make your home look elegant and warm, and you can add your own flair to the design as you install it.
Depending on the tones you choose and the pattern you nail them in with, your home will be unique and comforting. Cedar shake siding is an expensive option that will be completely worth it.
